Maenam is a 7 km long stretch of sandy beach just to the east of the famous boutique area of Bophut. It is one of the most famous beaches in Koh Samui that has its own particular character and is quite different to either Bophut or the main tourist area of Chaweng. This post will take a closer look at Maenam so as to give the reader a clearer idea whether it is the type of beach that appeals to the reader.

Bophut to the west has Fisherman’s Village that consists of several converted Fishermen’s houses that are now cafes, bars, restaurants and shops. Along with the boutique feeling of Fisherman’s Village the accommodation at Bophut is mostly mid-range and luxury. You pay some of the highest prices in Koh Samui, but you get a boutique style that is largely absent elsewhere on the island.

Boutique is not the way anyone would describe Chaweng. Rather it is loud and brash. It offers plenty of everything: shops, bars, nightclubs, cheap bungalows, luxury hotels and unfortunately too many ‘girlie bars’. While many people love the atmosphere of Chaweng, just as many despise the tacky nature of the place.

Maenam is like neither Chaweng nor Bophut. It is not boutique. Indeed the town is decidedly plain. It is a handful of roads with a few shops, bars, restaurants and travel agents. Maenam is also not tacky or brash. It has a low-key atmosphere and is largely free of women of easy virtue. Instead Maenam is the closest Koh Samui has to a backpacker feel.

The long stretch of beach has several cheap and mid-range bungalow places to stay. The rooms in Maenam are some of the cheapest in Koh Samui and yet they still offer air-con, hot water, fridge and TV. You can usually find a bungalow in Maenam on the beach for as little as $15 a night.

Many people staying in Maenam take advantage of the several cheap Thai restaurants in the town as well as the 7-11 next to the pier.

Finally, Maenam is an important transport hub in Koh Samui. There are several ferry companies that use the pier at Maenam. You can catch a boat from Maenam to Koh Tao, Suratthani and Haad Rin in Koh Phangan where the famous Full Moon Party is held. If you are looking for a cheap place to stay in Koh Samui and want a convenient and quiet town then Maenam is a good option. It is also a good place to stay if you want to go to the Full Moon Party.
